How Much Does a Custom Wine Cellar Cost?

Most of the cellars we build fall between $45,000 and $250,000. That is a wide range because a wine wall in a living room and a conditioned room with seating and a tasting counter are not the same object. Here is what moves the number.

These are the ranges our own projects fall into, not a price list. Nothing here is a quote — the first conversation is what establishes which end of the range your project sits at, and it costs nothing.

Three bands, by capacity

Capacity is the first thing anyone knows about their own project, so it is the most useful way in. Within each band, the figure moves with glass, materials and site.

200 – 500 bottles

$45,000 – $85,000

A wine wall, a glazed alcove or a cabinet built into an existing room. The racking is still drawn for the space, but the room itself already exists and needs no structural work.

Usually: Condominiums and apartments, under-stair spaces, and dining or living rooms where the collection is meant to be seen rather than stored away.

500 – 1,500 bottles

$85,000 – $150,000

A dedicated conditioned room: insulated envelope, vapour barrier, glass door or wall, full racking, integrated lighting, and the housing a refrigeration specialist installs their equipment into.

Usually: The most common project we build. A spare room, a basement or a space carved out during a renovation, finished as a room you walk into rather than a closet you open.

1,500 bottles and up

$150,000 – $250,000+

A designed room with seating, a tasting table or counter, display and bulk storage separated, feature lighting, and materials specified to sit with the rest of the house.

Usually: Estate homes, penthouse floors and restaurants. At this size the cellar is part of the architecture, and the design stage is usually a collaboration with the architect or interior designer already on the project.

What actually moves the number

In the order it moves it. Two of these surprise people — glass, and the difference between display storage and bulk storage.

Capacity, and how it is split
Bottle count sets the volume of racking, but the split matters more than the total. A thousand bottles in single-bottle display costs far more than a thousand in bulk storage, because display racking is more material, more fabrication and more lighting per bottle. We build from 200 bottles upward.
Whether the room is conditioned
An unconditioned wine wall in a living room and a sealed 55°F room are different builds. Conditioning adds insulation, a vapour barrier, a sealed door or glass wall, and the housing the cooling equipment sits in — and in South Florida it is what makes long-term storage possible at all.
Glass
Glazing is usually the single largest line after the racking. Tempered or low-iron glass, frameless assemblies and structural glass walls all cost differently, and each one changes the thermal load the cooling system has to hold against.
Materials and finish
Acrylic, powder-coated steel, stainless, solid hardwood and lacquered millwork sit at different points on the scale, and the finish schedule (hand-applied lacquer, veneer matching, custom colour) can move a quote as much as the material itself.
Lighting
Lighting embedded through the racking — the thing that makes a cellar read at night — is designed and wired as part of the build, not dropped in afterwards. It is a real line item and it is the one we argue hardest for.
The condition of the site
A room built during a renovation is cheaper than the same room retrofitted into a finished house. Access matters too: a tower installation with a service elevator window and association rules takes longer than a driveway and a front door.

“Dragon Cellars did a fine job in completing our Wine Room on time and on budget. Worked with the initial designer to select colors and finishes, very nice to see it go from concept to reality. The General Contractor was also good to work with, when he was presented with obstacles he quickly found a solution. End result is a beautiful wine room with excellent follow up from Dragon.”

What a cellar quote does not include

Said here rather than at invoice stage.

  • The refrigeration equipment itself. We build the room it depends on and coordinate the specialist who supplies and commissions the unit; their equipment and labour are quoted separately.
  • General construction outside the cellar — demolition, framing a new room, moving electrical service, flooring in adjoining spaces.
  • Permits and association approvals, which vary by municipality and by building.
  • Shipping and installation outside South Florida, which are quoted per project.

What the figure buys

One company from the first drawing to the last adjustment. The stages are the same on every project, whatever the budget.

  1. 01

    Consultation

We look at the space, the collection and the budget before anything is drawn.

  2. 02

    Technical proposal

A drawn design proposal. Nothing is built until you approve it.

  3. 03

    Fabrication

Built to the measured room — no catalogue modules.

  4. 04

    Site preparation and installation

Envelope first, then racking, glazing and lighting, by our own team.

Common questions about cost

How much does a custom wine cellar cost?
Most of our projects run between $45,000 and $250,000. Where a specific project lands depends on capacity, whether the room is conditioned, how much glass it uses, the materials and the state of the site. A wine wall in an existing living room sits at the lower end; a conditioned room with seating, a tasting counter and structural glass sits at the upper end.
What is the minimum you build?
200 bottles. Below that, a good wine cabinet or a quality refrigerator does the job better and for far less, and we will tell you so rather than take the project.
Is the refrigeration equipment included in the price?
No. We build the room the cooling system depends on — insulation, vapour barrier, sealed door or glass wall, and the housing the equipment sits in — and coordinate the refrigeration specialist who supplies and commissions the unit. Their equipment and labour are quoted separately so you can see both numbers.
Do you charge for the design?
The first consultation costs nothing. Design work — measuring the space and drawing the proposal — is quoted before it starts, and nothing is fabricated until you have approved what you are getting.
Why is one cellar twice the price of another the same size?
Usually glass and display. A thousand bottles in single-bottle display racking behind a structural glass wall is several times the material, fabrication and lighting of a thousand bottles in bulk wood storage behind a solid door. Capacity alone never predicts a quote.
How long does it take?
Typically three to five months from approved design to handover, driven mostly by fabrication time and by how ready the site is. Design and approval come first and move at your pace.
